New water website highlights NAU water research, education, and outreach

With all the complex and significant water issues facing us today, we decided it was time for a website to bring together all the water-related research, education, and outreach programs at NAU. Check out the website.

"Farewella Louella: Louella Holter retires"

Retirement reception for Louella Holter. Associate Editor Louella Holter, the first employee at Bilby Research Center when it opened in 1981, will be retiring on October 25. We will have a reception (open to all) for her from 1:00 - 3:00 in the Bilby conference room (building 52). Please join us in bidding her farewell and a happy retirement!

Bilby Research Center welcomes Patrick McDonald, our new Web Designer.

We are pleased to announce the return of Patrick McDonald to our Research Support Services team. Patrick worked with us from 2003 to 2005 as a photographer (view his website at http://www.pmcdonaldphoto.com/ ), and returned to us when our Web Designer position opened up when Michelle Dodd left (see below). Patrick will be designing websites for research programs and labs across campus. You can contact him at 523-7455 or by e-mail at Patrick.McDonald@nau.edu.

Farewell to Michelle Dodd!

Michelle, our first Web Designer (and the first Web Designer in the Arizona Tri-University System!), has departed on a cycling adventure that will take her along the entire Continental Divide Trail from Canada to Mexico, then off to northwest Africa for a 9-month (or longer!) bike tour. We will miss her very much, but you can keep up with her travels at her weblog: http://www.outsideforever.com/ . Happy trails, Michelle!

Archaeology of Perry Mesa

The Archaeology of Perry Mesa and its World

by David R. Wilcox and Jim Holmlund

Volume 3 in our Bilby Occasional Papers series, The Archaeology of Perry Mesa and Its World, by David R. Wilcox and Jim Holmlund, has been released and is available through University of Arizona Press. On Bastille Day, July 14, we had a reception and book signing at the Musuem of Northern Arizona, which was attended by many of the professional and avocational archaeologists which made the Perry Mesa project a success. Read more about the book here.

Bilby Research Center Occasional Papers in Environmental and Cultural Change

Northern Arizona University is uniquely positioned to contribute to a deep regional understanding of the environment and cultures of the Colorado Plateau and adjacent regions. Making connections between cultural issues—past and present—and environmental change and conservation is vital to successfully protecting and restoring our forests, woodlands, and deserts. This involves understanding humans as an integral part of the ecology of the region. Archaeology and anthropology provide important insights into indigenous adaptations to these unique environments; the natural sciences contribute detailed and sensitive indicators of the responses of our environment to influences such as climate change and land use. Our occasional papers series provides a unique venue for a convergence of these many sources of information.

Bilby welcomes Victor Leshyk, our new Technical Scientific Illustrator, Sr.

As part of the research support services provided by the Bilby Center, we offer scientific illustration and the creation of maps and diagrams for researchers across campus. We have recently hired Victor Leshyk, an extremely talented scientific illustrator, to provide these services. Victor brings an entirely new skill set to NAU, including intricate hand (or computer) renderings for the natural sciences and extensive experience in creating and installing museum exhibits (check out the new exhibit at MNA on the Therizinosaurs which opens this fall!). Victor brings a strong fine arts background to this position (BFA, University of Wisconsin) as well as a well-rounded understanding of the life sciences (BS in Bio-Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Wisconsin). We hope to be able to begin offering workshops and short courses in scientific illustration. Check back soon for astonishing examples from his portfolio!

Arizona Water Institute now housed at Bilby Research Center

We are very pleased to welcome the newly-created Arizona Water Institute to the Bilby Center. AWI was created to coordinate the efforts of Arizona’s three state universities in addressing issues of water education, research, community assistance, and economic developments. AWI also partners with Arizona state Departments of Water Resources, Environmental Quality, and Commerce, and other partnerships are being established.

Inside NAU ran a story about the new institute and the projects awarded funding at NAU here.

Visit the AWI website for more information: www.azwaterinstitute.org
